Important roadworks information

A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass: safety improvements

I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out essential improvement work on the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass. Our work will include resurfacing the B5120 Roundabout, replacement of road markings, studs, signs, and other routine maintenance. This will ensure the A5 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

We plan to complete this work in three phases from Tuesday 27 May to Wednesday 18 June 2025. We will work overnight between 8pm and 6am, on weeknights only, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass and divert traffic as follows:

Closure Date/Time Diversion
Phase 1

A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass (both directions)

Tuesday 27 May to Tuesday 3 June

Drivers wishing to travel westbound on the A5 Northern Bypass should remain on the M1 and take the exit slip road at junction 11. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto A505 Dunstable Road. At the next roundabout, take the second exit onto Luton Road. Continue along Luton Road, merging onto Church Street. At the traffic lights, turn right to stay on the A505. Merge onto Watling Street, where the diversion will end.

Drivers wishing to travel eastbound will follow the above diversion in reverse.

Phase 2

A5 eastbound between Watling Street and M1 junction 11a

Tuesday 3 June to Tuesday 10 June

Drivers wishing to travel eastbound on the A5 Northern Bypass to join the M1 should head south on Watling Street and merge onto the A505. At the traffic lights, turn left onto Church Street and continue, merging onto Luton Road. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Dunstable Road. At the following roundabout, take the first exit onto M1 north, where the diversion ends.
Phase 3

A5 westbound between M1 junction 11a and Watling Street

Tuesday 10 June to Wednesday 18 June

Drivers wishing to travel westbound on the A5 Northern Bypass should remain on the M1 and take the exit slip road at junction 11. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto A505 Dunstable Road. At the next roundabout, take the second exit onto Luton Road. Continue along Luton Road, merging onto Church Street. At the traffic lights, turn right to stay on the A505. Merge onto Watling Street, where the diversion will end.

Local traffic diversion

From Chalton Roundabout at the M1 junction 11a, take the A5505 Woodside Link and continue for 1.8 miles. At the fourth roundabout, proceed straight onto Porz Avenue. At the Apex Centre Roundabout, take the second exit back onto Boscombe Road. At the traffic lights turn right onto Luton Road and follow diversion above.

The local traffic diversion can also be used in reverse.

Map of the diversions can be found below.
